Triggers: mildly scary drawings of monsters

About the author: Molly Knox Ostertag grew up in the forests of upstate New York, where she spent the first half of her childhood reading about fantastical adventures and the second half acting them out with foam swords at a live action role-playing group. She currently lives in California and graduated in 2014 from the School of Visual Arts, where she studied cartooning and illustration.

“Even magic has rules”

Thirteen-year-old Aster was born into a family where the girls grow up to become witches and the boys shapeshifters, no exceptions. Anyone who breaks this rule is exiled. Aster, however, still hasn’t gotten the hang of shapeshifting and is much more enchanted by the magic of his witch relatives. But when a mysterious danger starts taking the young boys in Aster’s family, Aster knows he can help—as a witch. With encouragement from his new non-magical, non-conforming friend, Charlie, Aster will need courage in order to save his family and be true to himself. I absolutely adored The Witch Boy from page one! Ostertag creates a beautiful story about breaking gender conformity and being true to oneself. Her drawings are colorful, charming and full of diverse, complex characters that help build Aster’s world. The story comes to a satisfying resolution, leaving open the door for more adventures in the highly anticipated sequel The Hidden Witch. I thoroughly recommend The Witch Boy to anyone and everyone!
